ROMAN TIME CAPSULE - 1 x 52 minutes
Pulled from the depths, an ancient Roman vessel opens a window to the past.
Two thousand years ago a small Roman cargo vessel set sail across a calm Mediterranean sea only to have the weather change into a deadly storm sinking the ship. While this was a common occurrence two thousand years ago it is an uncommon occurrence to find a Roman cargo ship in 65 meters of water two millennia later... virtually intact.
This documentary is about one of the most important archaeological finds in decades. Remarkably preserved, it was accidently discovered in 2002. Since then Dr Gambogi of the Italian Ministry of Cultural Heritage and Activities, has assumed direction of the excavation and made 5 campaigns, until in 2010 she confirmed the shipwreck is practically a “time capsule” of that shipping era.
An underwater excavation campaign at a depth of 65 meters, well over the limits of normal divers, is being carried out by the deepwater Explorer Team Chimera, a tight-knit team of technical divers who designed the special equipment used for sucking up sediment from the ocean floor.
An extraordinary load made up of 10 huge containers used for the transportation of wine and oil, employed in a limited time-range (from 50 B.C. to 50 AD), will allow the archaeologists to delve into the many aspects of the navigational techniques and ancient Rome's trading maritime routes.
For two thousand years a Roman cargo ship lay silent at the bottom of the Mediterranean. Today a team of high-tech divers uncovers a treasure of historical significance.
